Hydrogen carrier gas can be an effective replacement for helium in many gas chromatography (GC) and GC–mass spectrometry (MS) applications. Hydrogen provides a better combination of efficiency and speed over a wide range of linear velocities. Carrier-gas quality hydrogen can be generated using hydrogen generators that pay for themselves in a relatively short time. Concerns over its safety are greatly exaggerated but some degree of caution is necessary.
